For years, I have tried to make the best clothes in the world. I dedicated all my time and energy to trying to understand what it is that makes a woman feel beautiful, sensual, comfortable and powerful by selecting the most exquisite and rare fabrics and by searching for the perfect colour tone, the one which would provoke most excitement… We were successful and had many faithful clients who looked for our clothes at a time when we had unusual lines in the market. However, as the years went by I began to understand that my clothes were not exactly “beautiful” in the full sense of the word. I could not be untrue to myself knowing about the enormous amount of toxic ingredients being used in textile processes; I could choose to work with natural fabrics, but my passion for agriculture helped me understand the drama surrounding transgenic cotton farming due to the use of pesticides and the burden of debt for farmers. It was difficult to ignore that the process of dressmaking is not always carried out under the best conditions and is often underpaid. Looking around, there were many things I did not like and I could no longer ignore the fact that everything is connected. I slowly began to introduce improvements, searching for new production processes, focusing more on supporting craftsmen and trying to harvest the knowledge of our latest great dressmakers. As much as I was able to, I chose to support textile projects with a beautiful story behind them as well as brave initiatives. This however was not always easy. When I lost control over my brand names, I decided to create the parallel project Fabrics for Freedom Foundation – a foundation which could contribute to the process of accessories and clothes manufacturing becoming beautiful in every sense, not only for those products created by me, but for any brand which desired to, and in this way allowing me to fulfil a long time dream.
I know that when faced with a choice, we all wish to select materials and production processes that help create a better world in some way or another. Our mission at FFF is to make sure these projects are easily accessible, solvent and competitive while helping everyone involved in every possible way. I believe we need to have a wider concept of what good design is, we need to do things differently, both in creative and in business aspects, and we would like to be able to apply the term “benefit” in the fullest sense of the word, since we believe that a business can be a powerful instrument to change the world. Along the way we have come across some wonderful proposals and we have identified places where we can generate prosperity and well-being by supporting textile projects or creating them when necessary. Our aim is to
-develop textile products made with love and care in different parts of the world while also rediscovering some of those still manufactured in our country,
- to support groups of women to form teams together and who through their courageous efforts create small cooperatives able to promote change in a region
-to introduce new ways of dying fabrics that are toxic free
-to present spectacularly smart crafts projects
-to support innovative industrial processes that may contribute to a new vision of clothes manufacturing.
These times are too important to just sit back….. Love, Sybilla
